Jaclyn Michelle Smith
I am a former social worker and current HR professional in Charleston, SC, where I focus on employee engagement and company culture. I love performing improv and stand-up comedy around Charleston and find joy in making people laugh. I also love volunteering in my community and share my home with a scruffy dog and two outrageously fat orange cats.
My debut book, I'm Sorry I Cremated You, brings humor, heart, and real-life caregiving experiences to the table. I also speak to groups, blending empathy and laughter to help others navigate life’s toughest (and sometimes funniest) moments. In addition, I am a wedding officiant in the Charleston area, crafting custom, warm, and lighthearted ceremony scripts that celebrate each couple's unique love story.
I'm Sorry I Cremated You Finding the Funny in Life & Loss
2022 was one of the hardest years of my life. I stepped into the role of caregiver for my father, faced the heartbreaking decision of checking him into a Veterans’ nursing home against his will, and eventually lost him to Dementia. I survived it all with the unwavering help of friends and family, a lot of improv comedy, and my trusty journal. That journal ended up becoming the basis for my book, I’m Sorry I Cremated You. It was simply too full of magic—both happy and sad—not to share with the world.
I wrote this book for my fellow Gen Xers and Millennials who find themselves parenting their parents and losing them. Please know that you are not alone. As the saying goes, we’re all just walking each other home. My deepest hope is that when you read my book, you feel less alone, find reasons to smile, and maybe even catch yourself laughing.
